Patients have the right to request information about the names, dosages and adverse effects of the drugs that are being prescribed to them, states the NABH/DMAI Patient Charter.

The Consumer Guidance Society of India also states that patients must be explained about the treatment or medicines that are prescribed to them. They should be clearly informed about the risks and side effects, if any. Patients have the right to ask questions and clarify their doubts regarding their treatment.

The Indian Medical Council (Professional conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002 Regulation 6.5 requires that all the drugs prescribed by a physician must carry a proprietary formula and clear name.
